Rolex Submariner

The Rolex Submariner watch is a Perpetual Oyster Submariner by Rolex and a reference among divers’ watches. Launched in 1953, the Submariner was the first divers wristwatch that was designed to be waterproof in a depth of 100 metres (330 feet). This was the second breakthrough in the technical performance of waterproof watches. The first being the initial invention of the first waterproof wristwatch in 1926, the Rolex Oyster. The Submariner created a turning point which set the standard for diver’s watches.

Submariner Design

This watch was designed entirely in response to the practical needs of divers. Since 1953, the Submariner has evolved and improved its features and functionality. It is the first watch to pioneer the design specifications of a divers’ watch and has since continued to set benchmark.

The Oyster case features a distinctive dial and large luminescent hour markers with a unidirectional rotatable bezel. The dial features luminescent chromalight display which improves it’s visibility in dark environments, an absolutely essential feature for divers. The Submariner watches are equipped with calibre 3130 and 3135 self-winding, in-house mechanical movements designed by Rolex.

The unidirectional rotatable bezel is key to the functionality of the watch. The engraved 60-minute graduation allows a diver to monitor diving time and decompression stops. Safely and accurately. The Cerachrome bezel insert is virtually scratchproof and unaffected by ultraviolet rays, seawater or chlorinated water. The bezel is manufactured by Rolex and is made from a hard corrosion-resistant ceramic.

Submariner History

The first Oyster by Rolex was released in 1926. The watch was originally created for underwater exploration and diving. Since then, it has proved, over the years, to be as useful in home and out of the water as it has been among divers. This is evident by the numerous athletes, explorers, film makers and artists who have all sported the Rolex Submariner watch. Such as, football icon Pele, who has been spotted wearing the Rolex Submariner. Not to mention, actors Johnny Depp and Al Pacino.

The classic watch has made an appearance in multiple films including the 1980 movie, Hunter, worn by Steve McQueen, the 1975 thriller Jaws on the wrist of Richard Dreyfuss, Titanic displayed by Bill Paxton and by James Bond in the 1964’s Bond film, Goldenfinger as worn by the legened Sean Connery.
